Music News: New Girlicious (Girls United) Line-Up For 2012

On February 26, 2011 Natalie Mejia and Chrystina Sayers quit Robin Antin's girl group, Girlicious , leaving Nichole Cordova as the last standing member.

If my research is correct the defunct group will get re-vamped sometime this year and they'll supposedly be dropping the Girlicios title in exchange for the more campy sounding, Girls United.

The group now consist of Nicole Cordova (alumni member), Candice Craig, Kasey Osborne, and Alex Segal. The quartet has finished shooting a music video and hopefully we'll hear new music soon and let us all pray these girls don't end up like the last Pussycat Doll line-up. Checkout some pictures of the group in action.

Music News: Chris Brown Gets No Stars Ever

(Pic Source: http://theamericankid.com)

Chris Brown's Fortune album gets no love in the papers! I don't know who reviewed the album and I know nothing about the article (saw it on Tumblr). I've also haven't listened to Chris' new album Fortune either (not to interested to be honest) so I can't say if I agree with the critic or not.

New Music: Madonna ft. Far East Movement - Turn Up The Radio (Laidback Luke Remix)

 (Pic source: itno.co.uk/music)

Undisputed, Queen Of Pop, Madonna has once again taken one of her MDNA tracks, 'Turn Up The Radio' and remixed it by switching up the beat and adding some rap verses from, Far East Movement. When compared to the original track I'd say I prefer the Far East Movement (Laidback Luke remix). Check it out below.

Music Video: Ludacris - Jingalin

Ludacris finally releases the video for his new single, 'Jingalin', which samples LL Cool J's song 'Jingling Baby' (1990). The video is pretty much a super wild house party with tons of untamed girls that fight in Jello, frolick in the pool, and just generally jiggling around. I like the video, which was fun and I like the song so here really isn't much more to say so tune in below

'Jingalin' will appear as the first single off of Luda's upcoming 8th studio album , Ludaversal.

Music Video: Natasha - Riddle Me This

(Pic Source: Toyazworld.com)

Remember in 2002-2006 there was a boom of fresh, young, sassy, R&B singers such as Megan Rochell, Ciara, Brooke Valentine, Cherish, Tyra B, Yummy Bingham, Amerie, Teairra Mari, and Natasha?

Well If you fast forward to the present time, most of these musicians were dropped from their lucrative record label deals and have either faded into obscurity or are struggling to revive their careers. All of these singers were and are talented but my theory is the music industry was going through a change and R&B music was beginning to give way for more radio friendly Pop tunes.

One of those Musicians was singer/model and Rodney Jerkins A.K.A Darkchild's protogee, Natasha Bradley who was being groomed to be like the next Ciara. After the release of a few catchy songs such as 'Hey Hey Hey' and the awesome, 'Side Kick' she was dropped in 2010, which is about the same time when David Guetta was pioneering the Urban Electronic Pop movement to mainstream radios. If more traditional R&B artist didn't adapt like Kelly Rowland's did then you were dropped and forgotten about.

Anyway to get to the point Natasha has returned and released a viral video called 'Riddle Me This' (Seen On Rap-Up), which leans completely towards the  R&B genre so that means no synth pop or electronic over production.Check it out below.

BONUS: Check out the remix to her sassy and self indulgent song, 'Side Kick', whicch features none other then Lil' Wayne.

For more Natasha info check out her official website Natashanow.com or follow her on twitter @ http://twitter.com/yagirl_tasha

Music Video: Nina Sky - Heartbeat

Nina Sky has definitely done an image re-vamp since their debut song 'Move Ya Body' and if you've listened to any of their new music you'll also notice that their music has taken on a much different sound as well.

The Latino twins will be releasing their long awaited second studio album, Nicole & Natalie some time in the near future and they already released the first single and video, 'Day Dreaming' and now you can check out the second single and music video, 'Heartbeat' below.

http://www.thegreatblacknorth.blogspot.com/

Music Video: Cheryl - Under The Sun

British pop sensation, Cheryl has released the second video/single 'Under The Sun' (first single was 'Call My Name') off of her stellar album, 'A Million Lights' (June 18th 2012). Check out the 60's vintage themed video below.

I love her new album but I was honestly hoping her second single would be 'Ghetto Baby', 'Sexy Den A Mutha', or even 'Craziest Things' and not 'Under The Sun'.

Music Video: P!nk - Blow Me (One Last Kiss)

I'm not going to lie. I've never been to fond of most of  P!nk's music and I can name about four songs from her that I like throughout the span of her entire career.  However she has never bored me with her music videos, which I always watch because she has a flair for inventive video but I'm sure a lot of the credit goes to the directors (Dave Meyer in this case) who I'm sure come up with most of the video concepts.

Anyway check out her new video 'Blow Me (One Last Kiss)', which will appear on her upcoming album The Truth About Love ( September 14, 2012).

Singer Battle: Letoya Luckett vs. Asia Cruise - Tears

Today a former Destiny's Child member and an underrated song bird clash and butt heads over a sensual track called, 'Tears'.

I suspect 'Tears' was originally suppose to be on Asia Cruise's never released debut album, Who Is Asia Cruise? but since the album never saw the light of day the song ended up on Letoya Luckett's sophomore album, Lady Love (2009). Anyway lets get into both version and decide who'll be the reigning warrior princess  of 'Tears'. Let the battle begin!

Letoya Luckett - Tears

Asia Cruise - Tears

WINNER: Asia Cruise!!!

This was a tough battle and I needed to listen to both tracks over and over again but I settled with choosing Asia 's version because I just preferred her tone and arrangement slightly more then Letoya's.

Now YOU can vote below and sound off about who you think deserved to win!

Old But Gold: Eric Benet ft. Faith Evans - Georgie Porgy

Every now and then when I get time I put together an "Old But Gold" or "Singer Battle" post and today is the day when I'll be doing both of these types of post.

Today's "Old But Gold" song/music video is 'Georgie Porgy' from smooth singer, Eric Benet and  the soulful, Faith Evans. The jazzy and laid back track appeared on Eric Benet's platinum selling second studio album, A day in the Life (1999). Check out the official music video below.

New Music: Kardinal Offishall ft. Shi Wisdom - Mr. Parker + Download New Mixtape

Kardinal Offishall is one of the best rappers, Canada has to offer and why I say this is mainly due to the fact that no other rapper sounds like him or can deliver like him in Canada or America. He has a unique sound and he mixes in some Jamaican Patois with his lyrical content.

If you haven't gotten into to Kardinal's music yet then you definitely need to listen to his song 'Mr. Parker', which I heard on Kiss 92.5 earlier today. Check it out below.

If you want more Kardi then you can download his and Nottz Raw mixtape, Allow Me To Re-Introduce Myself and stream it below as well.

Super talented singer and song writer, Jade Alston shows off her playful side in her new music video, 'Sober'. Check the video out below.

Music Video: Lemar - Invicible

Beautiful song and video that's definitely worth a watch.

http://www.thegreatblacknorth.blogspot.com/

Music Video: Jasmine Villegas - Didn't Mean It

I don't know who Jasmine Villegas is but she has caught my attention with this very powerful video, which has some cringe worthy scenes involving domestic abuse.

Its a beautiful thing to see a musician discuss real issues through their art and actually connect with their listeners who can relate to these real life situations.

You get two thumbs up from me Ms. Villegas.

http://www.thegreatblacknorth.blogspot.com/

Music Video: Iggy Azalea ft. T.I. - Murda Bizness

I can't seem to dislike this video even though the lyrical content and the visuals are extremely inappropriate. Yes I'm not a supporter of small children being exposed to adult content but this video was to creative and the song was fire.

You all know that silly show, Toddlers and Tiaras right?  Well Iggy's new video 'Murda Bizness' was obviously inspired by those child pagneats and that TLC show.

All in all the video is cute and Iggy is awesome so I was willing to overlook the whole inappropriateness and just vibe with the quirky video. Check it out below.

http://www.thegreatblacknorth.blogspot.com/

Music Video: Lana Del Rey - Summertime Sadness

Just in time for those lingering last days of  summer, Lana Del Rey, realeases her beautifully depressing video, 'Summertime Sadness'. Her videos always give off a haunting and vintage feel that combines to make such a beautiful piece of work. Check the video out below.

RANT: Frank Ocean: The Gay Communities False Prophet

You know what I really didn't want to get involved in this stupid, Frank Ocean coming out event and nor have I ever planned to to talk about him or his group (Odd Future) but I've come to the boiling point. You see I'm not afraid to say what all these others blogs are to frightened to say because they are either getting paid to promote, which I never do because I promote artist for FREE or they are trying to push some agenda.

So I'm going to say what I have to say and if you don't like it then move on! I personally equate Frank Oceans coming out to a Black man joining the Klan! The fact that he went from being relatively unknown outside of the Black community to becoming a Messiah of sorts is ridiculous. What? He didn't know he was bi-sexual before his album came out? Can't you all see that this is a marketing ploy to cash in on one of musics biggest cash cows, the Gay community?

All of these blogs are so quick to miss the fact that Frank Ocean is part of Odd Future who is known for being lead by a homophobic cretin. Technically Mr. Ocean's an Uncle Tom to the Gay community and don't even bother saying "well, Tyler and Frank are separate individual". Well allow me to point out how the Black community crucified, Kreashawn for associating her self with her Racist colleague, V-Nasty. One could argue that  Kreashawn and V-Nasty are seprate entities and unlike V-Nasty, Kreashawn  has never been documented using the "N-Word" but yet she's received equal and if not more negative press then V-Nasty.

Oh you guys all seem to forgot that Canadian indie duo, Sara and Tegan have pointed out that Tyler The Creator is a misognistic homophobe? Well let me refresh your memory and take a look at what they have to say below in their open letter (its a long read but its worth it).

a call for change

When will misogynistic and homophobic ranting and raving result in meaningful repercussions in the entertainment industry? When will they be treated with the same seriousness as racist and anti-Semitic offenses? While an artist who can barely get a sentence fragment out without using homophobic slurs is celebrated on the cover of every magazine, blog and newspaper, I’m disheartened that any self-respecting human being could stand in support with a message so vile.

As journalists and colleagues defend, excuse and congratulate ‘Tyler, the Creator,’ I find it impossible not to comment. In any other industry would I be expected to tolerate, overlook and find deeper meaning in this kid’s sickening rhetoric? Why should I care about this music or its “brilliance” when the message is so repulsive and irresponsible? There is much that upsets me in this world, and this certainly isn’t the first time I’ve drafted an open letter or complaint, but in the past I’ve found an opinion – some like-minded commentary – that let me rest assured that my outrage, my voice, had been accounted for. Not this time.

If any of the bands whose records are held in similar esteem as Goblin had lyrics littered with rape fantasies and slurs, would they be labeled hate mongers? I realize I could ask that question of DOZENS of other artists, but is Tyler exempt because people are afraid of the backlash? The inevitable claim that detractors are being racist, or the brush-off that not “getting it” would indicate that you’re “old” (or a faggot)? Because, the more I think about it, the more I think people don’t actually want to go up against this particular bully because he’s popular. Who sticks up for women and gay people now? It seems entirely uncool to do so in the indie rock world, and I’ll argue that point with ANYONE.

No genre is without its controversial and offensive characters- I’m not naive. I’ve asked myself a thousand times why this is pushing me over the edge. Maybe it’s the access to him (his grotesque twitter, etc). Maybe it’s because I’m a human being, both a girl and a lesbian. Maybe it’s because my mom has spent her whole adult life working with teenage girls who were victims of sexual assault. Maybe it’s because in this case I don’t think race or class actually has anything to do with his hateful message but has EVERYTHING to do with why everyone refuses to admonish him for that message.

It is not without great hesitation and hand wringing that I enter into the discourse about Tyler, the media who glorifies and excuses misogyny and homophobia, and the community of artists that doesn’t seem remotely bothered by it. I can only hope that someone reading this might be inspired to speak out. At the very least, I will know that my voice is on record.

(Open Letter taken from Teganandsara.com)

Are we so desperate to have acceptance of Gay people that the very community that fights for Gay rights is willing to overlook what Frank Oceans group and close associates have done to affect the LGBT group. We as consumers can't keep falling for this mass media tom foolery where these big named Music execs or Musicians co-sign and sell us lies. If you want to support a real Gay artist then support K.D Lang, George Michael, Elton John, Tegan & Sara, or Adam Lambert. I'm sure none of those musical acts would ever be caught associating them selves with a homophobic people who say horrible things about their lifestyle.

Please people, research what your new fave musicians have said or done before you throw all your support behind them.
